Earl Grey “Kahlua”

I’m just going to say the one thing that {quote} adults {unquote} are not supposed to say: I really don’t like coffee!

I know I know; I’m (arguably) a grown-up with a college degree, monthly rent, and a car note. I work a 9-5 job every Monday through Friday. “Adults” like me are supposed to survive off of coffee morning, noon, and night!

But I’ve just never really been able to get into the bitter, burnt flavor of coffee. So sad. I guess I’m not a real adult…

The real problem comes when I want to enjoy holiday liqueurs like Bailey’s and Kahlua that either feature or are often used in coffees! How’s a girl supposed to drink grown-up holiday drinks when she doesn’t like coffee?!

Now all tea drinkers out there can rejoice with me!

Last year I set out to make a grain-free Bailey’s Irish Cream with rum, and this year I decided to make homemade kahlua… Without the coffee.

For anyone else out there who likes tea more than coffee, this earl grey liqueur is for you.

For anyone who loves kahlua and wants to try something with a little twist, you’ll be blown away by this tea-based kahlua.

And for everyone else who thinks the idea of a dark, rich, sweet, mellow, vanilla-scented liqueur sounds divine, well 1. You’re right, and 2. This is for you!!!

This earl grey tea take on homemade kahlua is honestly one of the best things to come out of my kitchen.

It’s one of those things that I simultaneously want to share with everyone and want to keep all to myself!

The earl grey tea is floral and sweet and the warm vanilla perfectly compliments the dark tea’s flavor.

Our method of making a super reduced tea syrup concentrates those delightful flavors before we mix that syrup with vodka.

And making the potent syrup as the base of our cordial means the homemade liqueur only needs to mellow for a week, as opposed to traditional homemade kahlua’s 3-week maturation period.

And after a week we have this aromatic earl grey “kahlua” that’s positively delicious served on the rocks, with a splash of cream, or added to a mug of tea.

This liqueur would make a wonderful homemade holiday gift, but I won’t judge you if you keep it for yourself!

Earl Grey “Kahlua”

Yield: 1 quart earl grey liqueur

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of water
  • 2 cups cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup loose earl grey tea
  • 2 vanilla beans, sliced lengthwise and seeds scraped out
  • 2 1/2 cups vodka

Instructions

  1. Add the water, sugar, and tea leaves to a large, thick-bottomed pot. Bring the ingredients to a boil over medium-high heat. When they reach a boil, turn the heat to the lowest setting and let the mixture simmer for three hours, stirring occasionally. At the beginning of the last hour, stir in the vanilla beans and vanilla bean pods.
  2. Strain the concentrated syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a one-quart sized jar. Add the vodka and stir well to evenly combine. Seal tightly and place in a cool, dark place for one week at minimum. The liqueur will only continue to mellow and lose the "bite" of the vodka the longer it sits, so let it mature longer if you have time.
  3. Serve over ice, with a splash of heavy cream, or added to hot tea. Enjoy!
